How to Prepare for an Abortion Pill

How to Prepare for an Abortion Pill

If you're pregnant and thinking about abortion, you’ve probably heard of the abortion pill. But before taking it, there are a few important things you should know to protect your health and make an informed choice.

Have questions? You can chat anonymously with a nurse anytime at no cost by texting (803) 598-8400.

Medical Abortion Checklist

1. Be Certain YOu Are Actually Pregnant

It might seem obvious, but in a moment of stress, it’s easy to rush ahead without confirming your pregnancy first.

Before taking the abortion pill, make sure you’re actually pregnant with a lab-quality test. Never take the medication unless pregnancy is confirmed, and always do so under the care of a medical professional.

2. Know the Status and Stage of Fetal Development

About 10%–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. A positive pregnancy test shows you're pregnant, but only an ultrasound can confirm if the pregnancy is viable and not ectopic.

Ultrasound also helps determine how far along you are. Since the FDA approves the abortion pill only up to 70 days of gestation, an ultrasound is key to making sure you're still within that window.

3. Make Sure THis is YOur Decision

Carrying a baby is a big decision that affects not just you, but those around you. You may be hearing different opinions—some encouraging you to carry, others urging you to abort.

But in the end, the choice is yours. No one—whether it's a partner, friend, or family member—has the right to pressure or threaten you into an abortion. You are legally protected from being forced into any decision against your will.

If you’re feeling pressured or unsafe, you’re not alone. Hope for Life Pregnancy Center offers safe, confidential, and professional support. We’re here to answer your questions about the abortion pill and your abortion options, with complete privacy and no judgment.

4. Know The Risks

Abortion is a serious decision that involves physical, emotional, and spiritual factors—and it carries certain risks.

It’s also important to remember that abortion is permanent. Taking time to feel confident and sure about your decision can help you avoid emotional or spiritual distress afterward. Some women experience feelings of regret, and that’s why support, education, and clarity are key before moving forward.
