How Pregnancy Tests Work
Pregnancy tests detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. HCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy, making it a reliable indicator of pregnancy.
When you take a test, it looks for hCG in your urine or blood, depending on the type of test. At-home pregnancy tests, which are most common, check for hCG in your urine and give results in just a few minutes.
When to Take a Test
For the most accurate results, it’s best to take a pregnancy test after a missed period. If your cycle is irregular, wait at least 21 days after unprotected sex before testing.
It’s possible to get a negative result even if you’re pregnant. This is called a false negative and can happen if:
- You test too early. For the most accurate results, take a pregnancy test after the first day of a missed period.
- You check the result too soon. Follow the test’s instructions and wait the recommended time before reading the result.
- You test later in the day. Testing first thing in the morning, when your urine is most concentrated, increases accuracy.
If you’re experiencing symptoms but get a negative result, consider retesting with us after a few days.
Pregnancy Test Types
Urine Tests
Urine tests are the most common type of pregnancy test, available over the counter in pharmacies, grocery stores, or through healthcare providers. At-home tests are convenient and deliver quick results, but for greater accuracy, a self-administered test provided by us can be a better choice so you can also get your questions answered and additional support services.
Blood Tests
Blood tests, performed by healthcare professionals, can detect pregnancy earlier than urine tests and measure exact hCG levels. While they’re more sensitive, blood tests are typically more expensive and less accessible. It also takes longer to get the results back, as they’re usually sent to a lab.
